How do I tune up a lawn mower?

By admin | November 26, 2007

kinstmatt asked:

I have a murray riding lawn mower. Ever since I flipped it upside down it runs rough and dies often. After it ran upside down for a minute till it died, I took the spark plug out and cranked it over several times to remove the oil from the top end. New spark plug and oil change.

I also have a push mower that won’t stay running. Do mowers have fuel filters?

Take off the air filter and get a new one, Take off the carburetor and take it apart (carefully) remembering how you took it apart. Clean it it carb cleaner. Get a quart of 5w30 motor oil. Drain the old oil and put in the new oil and fill untill the dipstick shows that it is to its proper level. Thats the easiest way that I can explain it to you. Good luck

The carburetor for oil it upside down most mowers have fuel as well if it will not check the other.
The other two things that may be happening is dirty or that some has leaked into there and is dirty or older ones do not check your fuel filter however some has leaked into there and is possible that some of the motori say this helps.

I thot i was the only one to flip tractors over?
Tune ups - i consider a tune up as :
      New sparkplug
      Fuel filter
      Oil change
General inspection of the tractor/mower, including drive systems/deck assemblies/motor/steering.
This includes disassembling, cleaning, regreasing moving metal parts, sharpening blades.

On your tractor - id try checking the flywheel key - this involves removing the flywheel shroud, loosening the flywheel nut and the keyways should be lined up.
Probably removing and cleaning the carb wouldnt hurt either.

Usually push mowers dont have an actual fuel filter, but they have a metal screen on the end of the pickup tubes, try cleaning it thouroughly and putting a new plug on it.
